advent calender day 3

Its day three and its time to make a little amigurumi snowman for our Christmas tree. This little guy is really quick and simple to make you'll have so much fun you'll want to make an army of snowmen. These can be made in any colour combination but I've gone for a traditional red and green.

Chubby snowman by Liz Ward

You will need;
Cotton DK weight yarn in brown, white, green and orange
3.5mm crochet hook
Black safety toy eyes 9mm
Red and green felt
Wool needle
Fabric glue
Stitch marker

Stitches and Abbreviations (UK)
Ch - chain
Sl st –slip stitch
dc – double crochet
blo – work in the back loop of the stitch only
flo – work in the front loop of the stitch only

Snowman
Starting in white yarn and make a magic ring and work 6dc into the ring. Six sts
Rnd 1: 2dc into each st to the end. 12sts
Rnd 2: (dc in the first st, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 18sts
Rnd 3: (dc in the first two sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 24sts
Rnd 4: (dc in the first three sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 30sts
Rnd 5-7: dc in each st to the end. 30sts mark round 6 with a stitch marker
Rnd 8: (dc2tog, dc in the next three sts) repeat to end. 24sts
Rnd 9: (dc2tog, dc in next two sts) repeat to end. 18sts insert toy eyes now, these go on the marked round 8sts apart.
Rnd 10: (dc2tog, dc in next st) repeat to end.           12sts

Stuff firmly now

Rnd 11: (dc2tog) repeat to end                                    6sts
Rnd 12: 2dc into each st to the end. 12sts
Rnd 13: (dc in the first st, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 18sts
Rnd 14: (dc in the first two sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 24sts
Rnd 15: (dc in the first three sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 30sts
Rnd 16: (dc in the first nine sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 33sts
Rnd 17: (dc in the first ten sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 36sts
Rnd 18-24: dc in each st to the end. 36sts
Rnd 25: (dc2tog, dc in the next four sts) repeat to end. 30sts
Rnd 26: (dc2tog, dc in the next three sts) repeat to end. 24sts
Rnd 27: (dc2tog, dc in next two sts) repeat to end. 18sts
Rnd 28: (dc2tog, dc in next st) repeat to end.           12sts

Stuff firmly now

Rnd 29: (dc2tog) repeat to end                                    6sts

Fasten off and sew closed the hole in the base of the snowman. Weave in and cut off any loose ends.

Carrot

Starting in orange yarn and make a magic ring and work 4dc into the ring. 4 sts

Rnd 1-3: dc in each st to end. 4sts

Fasten off and sew in place on the snowman.

Hat
Starting in white yarn and make a magic ring and work 6dc into the ring. Six sts
Rnd 1: 2dc into each st to the end. 12sts
Rnd 2: (dc in the first st, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 18sts
Rnd 3: working in BLO throughout (dc2tog, dc in the next four sts) repeat to end: 15sts
Rnd 4-6: dc2tog, dc in each st to end 12sts at the end of rnd 6
Rnd 7: working in FLO throughout (dc in the first st, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 18sts
Rnd 8: (dc in the next two sts, 2dc in the next st) repeat to end. 24sts.

Fasten off and sew in place on the snowman’s head

Scarf
Make one in green yarn

Ch 4
Row 1: dc in 2nd ch from the hook, dc in the next two ch sts. 3sts
Row 2-46: ch 1, turn, dc in each st to the end. 3sts

Fasten off.

Knot lengths of matching yarn to the end of the scarf to form the tassels.
Tie in place around the snowman’s neck.

To finish
Use the photo as a guide to decorate the snowman with a bit of ribbon around the hat and black button or rounds of felt sewn in place to form the coal buttons.
